Having a neon sign outside your business is a huge asset where advertising is concerned. While it will draw plenty of attention during the day, this doesn’t have to stop when nightfall comes. People will be able to recognize your business from blocks away – a huge advantage in New York City. You can also customize neon signs so that they communicate your company’s unique brand.
In order to enjoy the benefits of a neon sign for years to come, you need to take good care of it. Fortunately, our years of experience with signs mean we can confidently offer the following advice.
Leave It On
Though this probably sounds like the exact opposite of what you want to do, leaving your neon sign on around the clock will also increase its lifespan. Turning your sign-on and off every day will wear out its transformer quicker than just leaving it on, and despite what you’d expect, you’ll save electricity by leaving it on. Furthermore, there is no fire hazard to keeping your neon light running around the clock. These lights don’t work with heated filaments, which is why they remain cool to the touch.
Clean It Regularly
No matter what kind of sign your company relies on, regular cleaning is important to ensure it always looks great. That’s why, at Metro Sign Services, we make it a part of our sign maintenance service.
If you have a smaller sign, you should be able to clean it yourself. Keeping your sign clean is important because it doesn’t take much dirt or dust for it to become noticeable to customers. You also don’t want dust to build up around the area where the wires connect to the tubes.
All it takes to clean your neon sign is a small nylon brush. Go over it once and then gently use room-temperature water and a sponge to get anything left over.
Inspect It Regularly
As they’re made from glass tubes, neon signs are fairly fragile. This is why you want to be so careful about where you place yours. It’s also why you want to inspect your neon sign as often as possible. If you catch a crack early, we can most likely repair it. Unfortunately, if the crack is allowed to spread or if it leads to further damage to the filament inside, you’ll most likely need a brand new one.
